THE BATTLE OF SKRA.

The Battle of Skra or the Battle of Skra di Legen (May 16 / May 29 – May 17 / May 30, 1918) is considered one of the most important victorious battles of the Greek army during World War I, as the attack was carried out by Greek, mainly, forces. The opponent was the Bulgarian army.

The glorious moments of local history will be reminded by the Hero of the Fallen but also by the bust of Major Vassilis Papagiannis, the highest-ranking Greek officer who fell on the battlefield. For lovers of history, around Skra there are still ruined machine guns.

SKRA WAR MUSEUM

The historic Skra, perched in Paiko is 24 km from Axioupolis.

Its history is glorious as the famous Battle of Skra took place there. In the village square there is a small historical museum that presents the Macedonian Front of the First World War and the important battle of Skra.

The museum exhibits weapons, uniforms, medals, helmets, fragments of armaments, as well as heirlooms from the Greek, French, British, Serbian, Austrian, Bulgarian and German armies. Also on display there is plenty of photographic material with moments from the hours of action and rest in the trenches of the Balkan battlefront, as well as paintings and lithographs of that time.

THE ATTACK OF THE REBELS AND THE SLAV-MACEDONIANS IN SKRA

In Skra, the First Attack of the “DSE” guerrillas against the Greek Army took place. A 6-hour battle was conducted with a small team of brood, the guerrillas won and entered the village.

Then followed:

  • total looting and house arson
  • rape of girls and women,
  • horrible torture,
  • murders of about 50 civilians, from a 2-year-old infant to a 70-year-old woman!
