ALLIED MONUMENT

You will easily find the Allied Monument of Polykastro at the height of the 60th kilometer of the new National Road Thessaloniki – Evzonon.

It is pentagonal and on each side is written an identical registration for each allied country, in order: Greece – Great Britain – France – Italy – Serbia. It was erected in memory of the 40,000 dead and about 100,000 wounded, disabled and missing soldiers of the ANTAT allied countries.

There is also the description: “To the children of France – Great Britain-Greece-Italy and Serbia, who, faithful to the orders of his ancestors, fought together in these places and fell for Freedom and for World Peace 1915-1918”.

The site of the monument is utilized, accessible, controlled and maintained by the Union of Greek Warriors and the Army.

British Military Cemetery

BRITISH MILITARY CEMETERY OF POLYKASTRO

The British Military Cemetery in Polykastro contains 1,421 burials of British Commonwealth soldiers, of which 56 are unknown. It was designed in 1920 by the Scottish architect ser Robert Lorimer.

On the hill of Agios Dimitrios, there is a cemetery of Greek soldiers who fell on the battlefields of Ravine, Skra and the wider area.

CENTRAL FOUNTAIN OF GOUMENISSA

In the central square of Goumenissa you can admire an impressive fountain that will cool you with its gargling water.

It is a monument built by the French Troops in 1918. In fact, in its inscription you will read “DIAVATA REMEMBERING THE FRENCH SOLDIER”.

TOWER AT THE FRENCH CEMETERY OF GOUMENISSA

A small turret located at the 1st kilometer of the public road Goumenissa-Giannitsa will impress you. It dominated a French cemetery of the AD, which was abolished in the 1920s. It is a monument photographed plenty of times by visitors and quite impressive.

STATUE OF FREEDOM IN AXIOUPOLI

It dominates the central square of Axiopolis and impressively represents the arrogant Eleftheria, who in her right hand holds a Evzon who falls for the Homeland and in the left a parchment, where the names of the immortal heroes are written. The proposal “In memory of those who fell in favor of the Fatherland 1917 – 1918” is written on the front of the pedestal.

It was created by the sculptor Demosthenes G. Papagiannis in 1926.

MONUMENT OF RAVINE HILL

At the top of the homonymous hill located near the settlement of Chamilos, there is a monument that ends with a cross. Above the Cross is written the sentence: “In memory of the fighters and Hoplites who died in favor of the Fatherland – May 1, 1917”.

FRENCH MONUMENT IN DREVENO

French monument to the fallen in the area of ​​Dreveno.

At a distance of 3.4 km SE of Plagia, next to I.N. Agioi Anargyroi Drevenou, there is a French monument to the fallen that dates from the time of World War I and was built during the years 1916 – 1917.

It is placed on a low base and writes on it: “LE 148 R. I. – A SES MORTS POUR LA FRANCE 1916 – 1917”.
