THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road is a historical and cultural reality waiting to be discovered and enchanted by its power.

The cultural and commercial connection of Greece with the East, but also the West, based on silk.

The most important historical connection between Greece and the Silk Road is that of Alexander the Great (356-323 BC).

Over the centuries, the Silk Road “endowed” the regions of our country, which were connected to it through land and sea routes, with a special heritage and a huge cultural reserve.

One of the areas that are characterized as landmarks of the Silk Road is Goumenissa.

CHRYSALLIDA – THE HISTORIC SILK FACTORY

At the entrance of the beautiful Goumenissa, a big surprise awaits you! It is none other than Chrysallida. The beautiful, imposing, listed building, which operated from 1930 to 1984 as a silk factory and greatly supported not only the local economy but mainly the local culture.

In Chrysallida from 1930 to 1984, 35 to 400 people were employed, mainly women, who were engaged in silk weaving, while at the same time many families in Goumenissa were engaged in silkworm breeding (sericulture).

Today, Chrysallida functions as a wonderful exhibition-museum space, which you can visit, after consultation and appointment with Fr. Christodoulos Papakostas, responsible for the “rebirth” initiatives of Chrysallida. The tools of silk weaving and hundreds of machines and heirlooms as well as silk creations are waiting for you to admire them and to travel mentally through time, seeing with the eyes of your imagination the silk factory alive.

Young and old alike cannot resist this unique experience.
